What is dry needling?

Dry needling at INSYNC Wellness in Brampton, ON is a treatment technique used by physiotherapists to relieve pain. It requires using a sterile acupuncture needle that is inserted through the skin into muscles, tendons, ligaments, and/or close to nerves to immediately reduce pain, decrease muscle tension and increase mobility.

Are dry needles safe?

INSYNC Wellness uses individually wrapped DISPOSABLE SEIRIN® J-Type Acupuncture Needles and Tai Chi™ Singles Acupuncture Needles. All needles are disposed of in Sharps Containers and will never be reused!

What conditions can be treated with dry needling?

Dry needling can be used for a variety of musculoskeletal problems. When combined with traditional physiotherapy and advanced manual therapy techniques, we have had success treating most pain-related problems from head to toe and from acute to chronic conditions.

Dry needling at INSYNC Wellness can also be used to help athletes in Brampton overcome delayed onset muscle soreness. As athletes push the envelope to become bigger and faster or to reach new goals, recovery becomes an essential phase in the process. Dry needling can be used to speed up this recovery time and allow the athlete to return to training or to playing as soon as possible.

Does dry needling hurt?

For most people, there is little to no discomfort with the insertion of the needle. INSYNC Wellness strives to make the treatment virtually painless; however, at times, you may experience a “twitch response,” which often feels like a quick muscle cramp or ache. These sensations are normal and even desirable at times. Following this technique, muscle soreness can be felt for 24-48 hours. Applying heat or ice and drinking plenty of fluids usually reduces the soreness.

Is there anyone who shouldn’t try dry needling?

It’s critical that you understand DNT’s contraindications (reasons to NOT partake in a specific type of medical treatment) and precautions.

Acute cardiac arrhythmias, irregular heartbeat, spontaneous bleeding or bruising, anticoagulant therapy, unstable diabetes, HIV, Hep B or C, cancer, recurrent infections, seizure triggered by previous medical operations are just a few of the contraindications.

If you have any of these conditions, we highly suggest seeking professional medical advice to ensure that dry needling treatments are safe for you. The hazards and side effects of dry needling therapy are uncommon, and the benefits often outweigh the risks.

How big are the needles? How many are used?

The needle diameter and depth are chosen based on the size and anatomy of the target muscle as well as the surrounding tissue. More superficial stimulation with a short and small diameter needle can help with more acute injuries.

There will most likely be many needles inserted into the muscle. Deeper, longer, and more closely spaced needles may be required for chronic injuries with more severe fibrosis.

Will I bleed during or after the session?

The majority of the time, there is no blood or bruising. If the tissue bleeds after the needle is removed, it will be squeezed for 5-10 seconds or 30-60 seconds using a cotton swab. If you are on anticoagulant medication, it is critical that you inform your physiotherapist.

How should I feel after a dry needling session?

It is normal to feel muscle soreness anywhere from 24 – 72 hours after dry needling therapy. Obtaining more than one or two twitch responses within a muscle during a session will undoubtedly cause post needling soreness.

Dry needling targets the actin-myosin connections of muscle fibers mechanically to destabilize and reset the system, resulting in myofascial trigger points. Chemical and hormonal messages are released due to the needle’s disturbance, which aids in the nervous system’s homeostasis. Consider the concept of muscular strengthening, as well as the principle of progressive loading.

It is believed that weight training results in muscle unit breakdown in order to rebuild stronger, more efficient motor fibers!

How many sessions at INSYNC Wellness should I expect to have?

If treatment zones are found, and the correct muscle groups are targeted, sub-acute conditions will improve after three or four consecutive sessions, with chronic injuries requiring five to six consecutive needling sessions.

What is the difference between dry needling and acupuncture?

While it is a common misconception, dry needling is not acupuncture. It is based on a modern scientific study of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular systems.

While there are some similarities, dry needling is strictly based on Western medicine principles and research. It provides an environment that enhances the body’s ability to heal, ultimately reducing pain in the process.

The workings of the human body, according to traditional Chinese acupuncture, are regulated by an energy called “Qi” that circulates through organs along channels called “meridians,” each of which corresponds to a primary function. To attain and sustain equilibrium, energy must flow through each meridian.

Acupuncturists use needles to normalize the flow of Qi in the body by inserting them into acupoints or specific energy points on the body. During a session, four to ten acupoints are typically handled over the course of 10 to 30 minutes.
